Swain was absolutely top class and very tough; trained by Andre Fabre at three and four, he won seven times from 12 starts for the yard, the highlights being when making all to beat Singspiel in the 1996 Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom, finishing second to Helissio in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and finishing fourth behind the same horse in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe; he joined Saeed bin Suroor for the 1997 campaign, winning the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on his second start for his new trainer, and was beaten a just short head by Silver Charm in the Dubai World Cup in March 1998; he went on to beat the Derby winner High-Rise to land back-to-back King Georges and followed up with a success over the dual subsequent Champion Stakes winner Alborada in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, he ended his career with possibly an unlucky third behind Awesome Again and Silver Charm in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs; incredibly versatile, he was effective over 1m2f to 1m4f and acted on any ground on turf as well as on dirt
