Pyro (USA)

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Pyro was second in both the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile in the autumn of 2007; remained with Asmussen for three-year-old campaign and continued to impress, winning the Grade 3 Risen Star Stakes and the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds; disappointing in the Kentucky Derby, but returned to winning ways when dropped in grade in the Grade 3 Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs; the son of Pulpit, who had looked to be crying out for middle-distances for much of his career, was dropped back to 7f on his first start for Godolphin and he shaped with considerable promise to finish second; showed that run was no fluke and gained what had been a previously elusive victory at the highest level when coming home like an express train to win the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga in September 2009; retired to stud at the end of that year
