Allergic ran well to come home third in his first Group One, the William Hill South Australian Derby, over an extended 12 furlongs at Morphettville, Australia, on Saturday, May 9.

The three-year-old son of Street Cry, trained by John O'Shea, was handily positioned from the start by apprentice Patrick Moloney after getting away smartly on the far rail.

He settled in sixth of the 16 runners on the inside and moved up to fifth in the back straight.

Allergic closed up towards the leaders turning in and went second soon after entering the straight. He challenged and took a narrow advantage before flattening out inside the final furlong.

The Godolphin horse finished two lengths behind the successful Delicay whose time on soft ground for the 12 furlongs and 110yards was 2m 37.91s.

John O'Shea commented: "It was a great run.

"The race opened up and Allergic got to the front much sooner than Patrick would have liked and was probably exposed a bit too soon.

"That was not Patrick's fault; just the way the race panned out, but this was another really good performance from Alergic.

"The horse has come a long way from winning a maiden at Sale to finishing third in a Group One Derby."
