Battling third for Barney Roy in G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes

Barney Roy produced another admirable display at Royal Ascot when staying on to finish third in the G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes over a mile and a quarter on Wednesday, 17 June.

The 2017 St James’s Palace Stakes winner, who also scored at G1 level in the Jebel Hatta Sponsored By Emirates Airline in March, raced freely in fourth under William Buick early on before being taken back a place with seven furlongs to race.

Barney Roy was switched out towards the centre of the course after being asked to improve turning for home and the Charlie Appleby-trained six-year-old stayed on gamely, with all seven runners appearing to hold chances approaching the final furlong.

Lord North (Dubawi) powered clear of the field soon after, with Barney Roy making good late headway to take third near the line, going down by five lengths to the impressive winner.

Charlie Appleby said: “Barney Roy has run another solid race and, if you take the winner out, there is not much between the rest of them. We were concerned whether there was going to be much pace in the race as he tends to latch on the bridle a bit.

“He saw the trip out well – I don’t think that we will be going any further than a mile and a quarter – and it would be nice if we stick to our long-term programme with him, which was to take him out to Australia. I think he will be a fun horse to take out there. We will see where we are come the autumn and if we can travel with him.”
