Australia’s most prestigious race meeting began encouragingly for Godolphin at Flemington on Saturday when Morton’s Fork and Bezel finished second and third in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes.

A photograph was needed to confirm all placings in the race that kicks off Melbourne Cup week, with the John O’Shea-trained pair just missing out.

Both colts ran on strongly with Bezel particularly acquitting himself well after being ridden hard from the gates and then disputing the lead.

The son of Street Cry seemed likely to drop out at the 300m but rallied strongly under James McDonald to rejoin the lead.

Just as he did, Morton’s Fork and the eventual winner Comin’ Through raced up with the latter doing best to score by a head.

Morton’s Fork held second, a head in advance of Bezel.

Craig Williams, who rode the runner up spoke glowingly of the colt, declaring him a bright Derby prospect in the Autumn.

“He’s an impressive colt to look at and he’s got some ability fo sure,” he said.

McDonald was also impressed with Bezel: “To keep on giving like he did was the sign of a good horse. We’ve got something to look forward to next prep.”
