A 12-month winning drought is capable of being broken by Calaverite when she runs in the G3 Kevin Hayes Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, February 13.
Calaverite (John O'Shea/Ben Melham) emerged as one of Godolphin's more promising Australian two-year-olds of last season when she won the opening juvenile race of the season, the Listed Gimcrack Stakes.
The effort led to her being mentioned as a G1 Golden Slipper contender before trainer John O'Shea switched course and sent her to Melbourne where she scored another Listed win at Moonee Valley last March.
"She's a nice filly who gave herself a great start when she won the Gimcrack," O'Shea said.
"She looks very well treated and she's back against her own age after running reasonably well against older mares last time."
O'Shea is concerned that the filly has drawn wide, but he hopes that disadvantage is offset by the moderate quality of her opposition.
"You never want to be drawn out but she has a few other things going for her," he said.
Among the most difficult opponents for the daughter of Lonhro are likely to be the New Zealand filly Risque and the locally-trained Safariann.
