Chamarel finished a promising third on debut in the Group Three Canonbury Stakes over five and a half furlongs on soft ground at Rosehill Gardens, Australia on Saturday, January 31.

The two-year-old Exceed And Excel colt, trained by John O'Shea and ridden by James McDonald, broke fast and raced a close second towards the outside.

He tried to make a challenge from two furlongs out but could find no more inside the final furlong and held on to third, beaten three and three quarter lengths by the winner Vancouver whose time was 1m 5.85s.

John O'Shea said: "Chamarel began well and travelled just behind the leader.

"In the straight, he chased well but was a little bit green in the run when James let him off the bridle.

"He will take good benefit from this run and maybe the addition of a set of blinkers next time. It was a nice performance first up."
