Class prevails as Star Safari gets up in Listed Zabeel Turf

Star Safari enhanced his enviable record at Meydan, UAE, when overcoming a troubled passage to take the Listed Zabeel Turf on week three of the Dubai World Cup Carnival, Friday, 28 January.
The six-year-old headed into the 10-furlong contest having won or placed on five of his six previous course appearances for Charlie Appleby, with three victories including a comfortable success in the 2021 G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes.
Held up in mid-field on the inside by William Buick, Star Safari had plenty to do as long-time leaders Marie’s Diamond and Erzindjan kicked for home at the top of the straight.
Star Safari made good headway entering the final furlong and stayed on bravely down the inner rail, collaring the front two half a furlong out before hitting the line strongly for a half-length verdict.
William Buick said: “I didn’t want to be where I ended up on Star Safari but it was a typical race where they go quick for the first furlong and then settle the pace down. At halfway, I knew something had to open up for him.
“Star Safari was the best horse in the race and showed a great turn of foot – every time I ask him, he was there for me. He’s a lovely old horse, who is going to be competitive throughout the Carnival.
“I was weighing up all my options but finally the best one was to stay where we did. It ended up working out well but I had the horse to get me out of trouble.”
