Toscanini was beaten a short-head in the Group Three Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club Phoenix Sprint over six furlongs at the Curragh, Ireland, on Sunday, August 9.

The three-year-old colt, partnered by William Buick, broke well and disputed the running before going into a definite lead.

The son of Shamardal, challenged inside the final furlong, was headed in the closing stages but rallied to be beaten in a thrilling finish by Mattmu whose time was 1m 10.62s.

Trainer Michael Halford said: "I was delighted with Toscanini's run and it showed that he has enough speed for six furlongs.

"He is better off running at horses but the race did not work out like that. It is very frustrating that the bob of the heads went against him.

"There is a similar race back here on August 22 (Group Three Gerrardstown House Stud Supporting Breast Cancer Research Renaissance Stakes) and we will aim at that."
