The four-year-old, with James McDonald up, raced in midfield of the 10 runners and then moved up to third after a couple of furlongs.
Hartnell was fourth with a half-mile to race and came through to second turning for home.
He challenged with two furlongs to go and soon led, powering clear to win by two lengths from Opinion in soft going in a class record time of 2m 2.60s.
Trainer John O'Shea commented: "Hartnell just cruised up the straight for a very convincing win.
"He was very strong through the line and I am looking forward to the BMW (Group One, 12 furlongs, Rosehill Gardens, March 28) in a fortnight."
