Furnaces came second in the Group Two UNSW Todman Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Randwick, Australia, on Saturday, March 7.

Trained by John O'Shea and partnered by James McDonald, the two-year-old son of Exceed And Excel broke well and raced a close third initially on the inside before soon taking a narrow lead.

Furnaces kicked on in the straight, was headed by Vancouver a furlong out and ran on to be a clear second. The winner won by three and a quarter lengths in 1m 8.83s on good going, with Furnaces finishing two lengths ahead of the third Headwater.

John O'Shea said: "Furnaces began well from an inside gate, James had to be aggressive on him and he went forward to hold his position on the fence as joint leader.

"There was no advantage being hard up against the rail today but he fought on really well. He took the lead, led into the corner and then into the straight where he worked home nicely.

"Another good performance; he will take good improvement from today and will be competitive wherever he steps out for his next race."
