The John O'Shea-trained five-year-old son of Lonhro, partnered by Hugh Bowman, was dropped in from his widest stall of all among the 15 runners and raced in third-last and second-last.
Generalife was switched to the outside turning in and came around the field into the straight.
He ran on strongly to take third in the closing stages, two lengths behind the winner Srikandi, whose time came to 1m 18.26s on good going.
John O'Shea commented: "Generalife was eight-wide on the corner and then put in a huge run in the straight to hit the line hard.
"His wide gate was the difference but he threw himself at the line and in one more stride would have been second. It was an outstanding run and I am very proud of his performance."
The other Godolphin runner, Knoydart (John O'Shea/James McDonald), finished 12th.
