Global weekly preview
Just as the curtain is about to drop on Deauville, and as the Saratoga meet starts to wind down, Australian sports fans are gearing up for their most intense burst of high-class racing, with Saturday's G1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield signalling the official start of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

A popular misconception in global circles is that Australia enjoys saturation racing coverage year round. The reality is that there are 2 Windows - at the most 3 - annually available to racing on the wider sporting media stage.
Starting this Saturday, racing gets its 10 weeks of headlines in newspapers, television and radio. This sparks huge public interest, resulting in big attendances.
It would be hard to better the quality assembled for this edition of the Memsie Stakes, over 1,400m (7f), but it has to be stressed this is just a starting point for high-profile horses, hopefully destined for big targets over longer distances later in the campaign.
It is worth A$500,000 and the first G1 of the Spring in Australia.
Godolphin run Tally, who finished third in the G1 ATC Derby in April after winning both the G2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield and the G2 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley. He is a very talented son of Street Cry with lots of potential.
Don't expect last year's G1 Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance to be involved in the Memsie finish, but the two G1 ATC Oaks winners, Rising Romance and Sofia Rosa, should both be running on in the home straight.
Arguably, the two most interesting Memsie runners are G1 VRC Derby winner Tarzino and G1 ATC Derby winner Tavago, both by New Zealand sire Tavistock. They are expected to be involved in races such as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and Cox Plate in coming weeks.
In the United States, the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga features a 14-runner line-up for the race in which Triple Crown winner American Pharoah suffered a shock defeat last year.
Exaggerator comes to the race off the back of a win in the G1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, New Jersey, and again meets the runner-up in that race, American Freedom. Meanwhile, G1 Belmont Stakes winner Creator is also in the field, along with Connect, recent winner of the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga.
It is a fitting finale to a great card on Travers day on which there are six G1 races programmed.
Finally, Deauville is drawing to a close after a month of continual racing, which has left its mark on the track.
Only five contest the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville, with the Francis Graffard-trained Erupt trying to book his ticket to the G1 Melbourne Cup. His last run was a fair fifth in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Siljan's Saga and Ventura Storm also have good credentials.
