Godolphin to the fore at 2YO trials
The new generation of Australian two-year-olds goes on public show for the first time at Sydney’s Canterbury racecourse today with Godolphin racehorses and Darley stallions impressively represented in both quantity and quality.

Youngsters related to some of the greats of Australian racing, including Black Caviar and Lonhro, and others from Godolphin’s most prolific local families are among the 10 runners trainer James Cummings has entered for the 12 heats.
The day begins for Godolphin with Metrical, an Exceed and Excel colt whose granddam is a half-sister to the champion racehorse and sire Lonhro, and ends with Osorno, another Exceed and Excel colt out of a half-sister to the multiple Group-winning filly Ghisoni.
In between there is Sergeant, a Helmet colt who is a half-brother to the Stakes winners Bello, Emblems and Trenchant from the family of the successful sire Volksraaad, and Beware, yet another by Exceed and Excel, from Caveat, a daughter of G1 winner Camarena and from the family of Guelph and Ghibellines.
One of the more intriguing Godolphin entrants is Skagerrak, a Dawn Approach filly from Itameri whose granddam Scandinavia is also the granddam of the unbeaten world champion sprinter Black Caviar.
The royal blue colours will also be carried by Hiemal, an Exceed And Excel colt who is a half-brother to the good racehorse and now a Darley Sire, Kuroshio; Nivelle, a half-brother by Sepoy to the stakes winner Souchez: and, Pindus a half-brother to 2015 Gimcrack Stakes winner Calliope.
Trainer James Cummings commented: “I’m expecting to see some nice trials from a very good selection of our two-year-olds. Giving them the experience of race conditions is important and we should learn a lot about them.”
