The three-year-old son of Exceed and Excel, trained by John O'Shea and partnered by Sam Clipperton, broke smartly and disputed the running on the inside.
Haptic led turning in and went for home at the distance but was headed well inside the final furlong and could find no extra in the closing stages.
He went down by a length and a half to the winner Japonisme who triumphed in 1m 2.75s on good ground.
John O'Shea commented: "It was a really game run by Haptic. The time was indicative that they went really hard and he ran out of his skin."
