Hauraki ran on to finish second in the Group One BMW Australian Derby over a mile and a half at Royal Randwick, Australia, on Monday, April 6.

The three-year-old Reset colt, with James McDonald taking the mount, was held up towards the rear of the 10-strong field, racing a bit keenly.

He moved up to mid-division and remained towards the inner as he took a challenging position. Hauraki kept on to go down by three quarters of a length to Mongolian Khan, with a half-head back to the third Volkstok'n'barrell. The winning time was 2:37.10s on heavy going.

John O'Shea said: "Hauraki travelled a bit too keenly in the run which compromised his finish. To win the Derby, we needed him to be relaxed throughout the run.

"Instead he raced pretty keenly for the whole of the race which ultimately was his undoing.

"It was a tough run but overall he gave an outstanding performance."
