Impending is to continue his quest for a farewell G1 win in next month’s Stradbroke Handicap following his outstanding second place in Saturday’s G1 Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane.
Trainer James Cummings will assess all his options over the coming week, but it is likely the colt will attempt a second successive Stradbroke win on 9 June.
Impending, who has a stud career waiting after the end of the current season season, could also go to the G1 Kingsford Smith Stakes over the Doomben 1,350m on 26 May.
In a high-class edition of the 10,000, Impending stormed home from beyond midfield to be narrowly beaten by English.
“He settled about a length further back than I would have liked, but he travelled beautifully and gave everything,” said jockey Damian Browne.
“In another couple of strides he’d have won. He definitely has another big one in him.”
Cummings was in agreement and will consider both races.
“He ran a really good race today and was unlucky not to have picked up his second G1,” Cummings said.
“We’ll see how he pulls up, but all going well, he’ll get his chance at another big race.”
While Impending is approaching the end of his career, a potential star of the future emerged from Saturday’s racing when Osborne Bulls overcame a series of obstacles to win the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone.
After being forced toward the rear of the field at the halfway mark of the 1,300m race, jockey Rachel King picked her way through the pack on Osborne Bulls, forcing a clear passage at the 100m and then racing away to a half-length win over Red Excitement.
The son of Street Cry has won seven o his 10 starts and been placed at the other three.
“He’s rocketed through his grades quite impressively, he’s much more like the complete package this time in,” Cummings said.
