Golden Syrup claimed the biggest success of his career as he got up on the line in a blanket finish to the Listed Oro Cup at Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday, 10 November.
The Shintaro Suzuki-trained six-year-old, who was seeking a first win since taking a Stakes race at the same course in November, 2021, broke half a stride slow from his wide draw and raced in 16th of the 18 runners.
Switched widest of all at the top of the straight, Golden Syrup responded well for Yusuke Hara’s urgings and quickened by a host of rivals inside the final furlong, denying Strauss by a head passing the post.
Godolphin’s other runner in the seven-furlong contest, Schwarz Kaiser, also finished strongly to take sixth, beaten less than a length in total.
