Maftool Could Figure In Tercentenary

Maftool steps up to a mile and a quarter for the Group Three Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot, UK, on Thursday, June 18.

The three-year-old colt, trained by Saeed bin Suroor, failed to get competitive when finishing down the field in the French Classic, the Group One Poule d'Essai des Poulains over a mile at Longchamp, France, on May 10.

He made a bright start to 2015 with three appearances on dirt at Meydan, UAE, including a staying-on second over an extended nine furlongs in the Group Two UAE Derby Sponsored By The Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group on March 28.

The son of Hard Spun won the mile Group Three UAE 2000 Guineas Sponsored By Al Tayer Motors on February 12 and was third in the trial for that Classic on January 15.

Maftool raced in the UK last year and won twice including an easy victory in the Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket in September.

Saeed bin Suroor commented: "Maftool was disappointing on his latest start but he has been working well and a mile and a quarter will suit him.

"Quicker ground will be fine for him and I am hoping for a better result."

James Doyle partners Maftool, drawn in stall nine, faces 13 other three-year-olds including Newbury handicap scorer Time Test, Newmarket Listed winner Peacock and Irish 1,000 Guineas fifth Bocca Baciata.
