Matilija kept on in third in the Group Three Dilmah Tea P J Bell Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Randwick, Australia, on Monday, April 6.

The Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained filly raced in fourth before being asked to improve with two furlongs remaining.

The three-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, with James McDonald in the saddle, did not have an immediate response but stayed on to go third in the final furlong.

Matilija was beaten a head and a length respectively by the winner Miss Cover Girl, whose time came to 1m 11.62s on heavy going, and second Peeping.

Anthony Freedman commented: "Matilija began well and rolled forward to travel at mid-field one off the fence.

"She was lying at fourth position by the 700-metres-mark, angled out three wide and worked home steadily. It was a good performance on a heavy track."
