Maverick Wave made virtually all of the running to post a brave success in the Group Three Betfair Huxley Stakes over an extended mile and a quarter at Chester, UK, on Thursday, May 7.
The John Gosden-trained four-year-old, making his Group debut following a 10-length handicap success at Chelmsford City, broke smartly and immediately set off into an uncontested lead under William Buick.
He started to wind the pace up with three furlongs to race and rallied gamely when briefly headed by Cannock Chase entering the final furlong.
Maverick Wave soon regained a narrow advantage and stayed on well to score by half a length in 2m 15.33s on soft ground.
William Buick said: "It was a very good performance from Maverick Wave to step up and win a Group Three. He did it very well - he stuck to his guns, liked the track and enjoyed the ground.
"I suppose it is an advantage to be on the front around Chester but you couldn't fault his tenacity. You have to admire a horse that can make the running, get passed and then come back to win.
"Now he is channelling all of his qualities in the right direction, we are seeing the horse he really is and there is a bright future for him. We have always thought a lot of him and it is no surprise to see him beating these kind of horses at this level.
"He is very effective at 10 furlongs and there are lots of options over that trip for him, including Royal Ascot. There should be more to come."
