Furnaces ran well to finish third on his return in the five-furlong Group Two Mitty's McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley, Australia, on Saturday, September 5.
The three-year-old Exceed And Excel colt, ridden by Patrick Moloney, was well away and raced in fourth and then third of the 12 runners.
Furnaces moved up and took the lead by the furlong-marker. He was headed with a half-furlong remaining and kept on in third, beaten a length and a half and a length and quarter respectively by the winner Chautauqua, who stopped the clock at 58.23s on good going, and the second Flamberge.
Trainer John O'Shea said: "Furnaces put up an outstanding effort; the track played all day to horses swooping late so he did a wonderful job and was only beaten by two Group One horses.
"I am looking forward to getting him to the Moir Stakes (Group One, Moonee Valley, 5f, October 2) where hopefully it will be harder to make up ground and I think he will be right in it up to his ears."
