Demonstrate ran well when a close third in the six-furlong Group Three HDF McNeil Stakes at Caulfield, Australia on Saturday, August 29.

The three-year-old son of New Approach, trained by John O'Shea and partnered by Craig Newitt, broke smartly from the outside nine stall and was held up.

Settled in last, Demonstrate came widest of all in the straight and progressed strongly to challenge inside the final furlong, just losing out by a head and half a length respectively to the winner Gold Symphony and second Ready For Victory. The winning time was 1m 10.53s on soft ground.

John O'Shea said: "This was a really great effort; only the gate beat Demonstrate as he had to go too far back after the jump.

"He attacked the line and almost got in front but the leaders had a soft time and were able to sprint over the final 100 metres.

"Demonstrate put in an outstanding performance against the best three-year-olds in Melbourne and acquitted himself really well. I believe if he had drawn a gate he would have clearly won."
