San Diego threw down a strong challenge and just failed to win the Group Two APN Outdoor Ajax Stakes over seven and a half furlongs at Rosehill Gardens, Australia, on Saturday, March 14.

The four-year-old son of Exceed And Excel, trained by John O'Shea and partnered by Tim Clark, was slowly away but quickly recovered the lost ground to settle in fifth on the inside.

He was switched left with a furlong and half to go and ran on well to finish third, a half-head and a half-neck off the winner Burbero and second Ninth Legion. The victor passed the post in 1m 29.78s.

John O'Shea said: "San Diego peeled off backs to fight out the finish.

"He was strong through the line and it was a very good performance second-up, stepping up in grade."
