Tally makes brilliant return to form in G3 JRA Cup

Tally returned to form in dashing style at Randwick on Saturday, winning the G3 JRA Cup and nudging his racetrack earnings toward A$1 million.

The son of Street Cry had been out of the winning list for more than a year, but had always retained his zest for racing.

Trainer James Cummings said Tally had been training well and had benefited from the suitable conditions of his latest race, the return of blinkers to his raceday gear and of the Randwick track.

“I felt that if we waited and played the patient game he would reward us,” Cummings said.

“He’s a horse who has always had his share of ability and just needed a few things to go his way.

“Today that happened and I’m very proud of his effort.”

Jockey Tim Clark got Tally to break cleanly and positioned him behind the leading bunch with a strong pace being set by Radipole.

With 300m to run he positioned the gelding to take advantage of a run that duly came at the 200m.

“He did no work along the inside and then dashed quickly when the run came,” Clark said.

Cummings is now considering a run in next month’s Listed Wagga Cup for the five-year-old who has now won four stakes races and was placed in the G1 ATC Derby in 2016.
