The promising three-year-old Etymology will be out to improve on some encouraging recent efforts when, along with stablemate Shards, he runs in the G3 Caulfield Classic at Caulfield on Saturday, October 17.

The relatively inexperienced Etymology has made a strong impression in his four starts to date, displaying a good mix of speed and stamina, and both will be required in his latest assignment.

A 1400m maiden winner at Pakenham last month, Etymology (John O'Shea/James McDonald) had always shown he would be more at home as his races became longer.

The son of New Approach verified that impression at his next start, finishing powerfully from near last to finish third to Tarzino in a three-year-old Handicap over 1600m at Caulfield on September 19.

Trainer John O'Shea then stepped him up in grade and distance and Etymology handled both, making good ground when sixth to Ayers Rock over 1800m in the Listed UCI Stakes at Flemington on October 4.

"He looks like a good young stayer in the making," O'Shea said.

"I liked his run at Flemington in a race where he got back and they dictated from the front. This race looks completely different and I feel he gets his chance, especially with another 200m to run."

Shards (John O'Shea/Zac Purton) backs up after finishing near the tail of the 16-runner field behind Press Statement in the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 10.

O'Shea, however, said the effort should be disregarded.

"He really didn't go around in the Guineas, it was as though he didn't have a race," he said.

"He was badly interfered with soon after the start and a couple more times after that."

O'Shea said the son of Medaglia d'Oro, who is already a G3 winner of the the Up And Coming Stakes at Rosehill in August, had been ready to run a big race in the Guineas following his second placing behind Press Statement in the G2 Stan Fox Stakes at Rosehill on September 26.
