Thunder Snow second in Irish 2,000 Guineas

Thunder Snow bounced back to form with a good second on his return to turf in the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas over a mile at the Curragh, Ireland, on Saturday, May 27.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained colt, who was pulled up shortly after leaving the stalls in the Kentucky Derby on May 6, broke smartly and soon settled in second of the six runners behind Lancaster Bomber.

Thunder Snow cruised up under Christophe Soumillon to briefly take the lead just inside the final quarter mile before being headed by Churchill shortly after.

He rallied in the closing stages to go down by two and a half lengths to Churchill, who won in 1m 40.46s on rain-softened ground, with a further four and a half lengths back to third home Irishcorrespondent.

Saeed bin Suroor commented: “Thunder Snow ran very well. He did everything right during the race and was beaten by a better horse on the day.

“We will keep the options open for him, including the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.”
