A courageous off-season effort has Godolphin's Australian team considering some important possibilities for Trenchant, winner of the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final at Flemington on Saturday, July 9.

Trenchant (John O'Shea/Craig Williams) survived by a nose after being trapped three wide for the entire 1600m, prompting his rider to question himself and praise the colt.

"He was off the bridle at the 600m and then when we got into the straight he was too sharp," Williams said.

"If I'd ridden him a bit prettier he probably wins more clearly. He really took a step up today."

Trenchant will now be freshened in preparation for a brief Spring campaign, with next Autumn's major three-year old races a possibility.

"We're looking forward to a nice future with him, there's a couple of races in the Spring. Hopefully there's an exciting Autumn ahead for him after that," said Godolphin's Melbourne stable representative David Charles.

The G3 Carbine Club Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington is one of the colt's Spring targets, along with the G2 Sandown Guineas.

Trenchant's performance in those races will help guide trainer John O'Shea as he plans an Autumn preparation that could include Sydney's major G1 three-year-old races.
