Adayar runner-up in G2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes

Adayar looks set to miss the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes later this month following a lacklustre second in the G2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket, UK, on Thursday, 13 July.

The 2021 Derby winner, who captured the Ascot centerpiece during a spectacular three-year-old campaign for Charlie Appleby, tracked stable-mate Global Storm for much of the 12-furlong contest.

Adayar moved up to lead approaching the final quarter-mile but was himself headed by Israr over a furlong from home. Israr soon took control and crossed the line four and a half lengths clear, with Adayar keeping on at the same pace under William Buick. Global Storm finished third, a further seven and a half lengths back.

Charlie Appleby said: “I am disappointed that Adayar didn’t finish his race and he was paddling up the hill. When William [Buick] pulled alongside Global Storm and Israr came under the pump, I thought that Adayar would get the job done. William said that he just emptied underneath him at that point.

“Adayar had a good, healthy blow afterwards, but nothing excessive, and has come back in sound, while I can’t use the ground as an excuse because he has plenty of form on it.

“We will make sure everything is all right and I don’t realistically think we will see him running in the King George, unless we see something obvious as to why we have been beaten today.”
