Ancient Truth joined some noted names on the G2 Superlative Stakes roll of honour as he comfortably maintained his unbeaten record at Newmarket on Saturday, 13 July.
Godolphin’s six previous winners of the seven-furlong contest for juveniles included Ancient Truth’s sire Dubawi, Quorto, Master Of The Seas and Native Trail, who all graduated to G1 honours.
Stepping up in class on the back of two novice race victories, Ancient Truth raced freely after finding cover in fourth as Assertively led the six runners.
Seagulls Eleven relegated Ancient Truth to fifth at the halfway point before William Buick switched the Charlie Appleby-trained colt to deliver his challenge over two furlongs out.
Ancient Truth quickened to take up the running approaching the final furlong and stayed on powerfully to beat Seagulls Eleven by a length and a half.
Charlie Appleby said: “Ancient Truth is still learning plenty. We couldn’t see any natural pace in the field and I told William to ride him like a good horse. He’s made the right decision in trying to get some cover on Ancient Truth – the leader put the handbrake on and it’s always hard for any horse to pick up here when the pace isn’t as genuine as you would like.
“William had to take him back to come round, so full credit to the horse, and I think there is still improvement to come. He looks to be going the right way and the team at home have done a great job.
“Shane Fetherstonhaugh, who is renowned for riding a few of our nicer horses, rides Ancient Truth at home and I always respect what he says. He said he wasn’t happy with Ancient Truth before his first two runs but was delighted with him this morning, which made me slightly nervous!
“I feel a mile will be his maximum trip and we will definitely work back from the 2,000 Guineas. We will see how he comes out if this and make a decision collectively, but going from here to the National Stakes is a well-trodden path for us.”
William Buick added: “It wasn’t made easy for Ancient Truth as he was in a pocket. He had to come back, go round and quicken up. He had a little look in front but it was a nice performance.
“This is a race Charlie knows so well and it has served him and the horses well over the years. Hopefully, he can follow in similar footsteps. Quorto, Master Of The Seas and Native Trail all went on to the National Stakes, like Dubawi, and I’m sure that race will be discussed. I believe he is a horse who is only going to get better.”
