Alizee establishes herself among the best of her age with G2 Randwick win

Godolphin’s Australian winning spree continued at Randwick on 17 February when Alizee returned to racing in spectacular style to win the G2 Light Fingers Stakes.

Having established herself as one of Australia’s best three-year-old fillies last spring, Alizee confirmed that status with a win that required her to dig deep before asserting herself.

The win came as the result of a clever ride and a typical team effort at home and on the training track.

“It’s taken a lot to produce her in winning condition first-up,” said trainer James Cummings.

“As always, the team has come together and got her to where she is. They can be very satisfied.

“It’s taken a while to tap into her potential, but she has returned stronger than in the spring and she has a lot more to offer.”

Alizee’s latest victory comes a week after Cummings landed five winners in a day with Hartnell winning a G1 and Kementari a G2 race. The team has produced seven winners, including Alizee, in the seven days since.

Given a perfect ride by Glyn Schofield, Alizee raced handily in fourth place until the 300m when she took a run between horses and soon assumed control.

She then knuckled down and fought off the runner Up Shumookh to win by a head.

Alizee became the first G1 winner for her sire Sepoy when she won the Flight Stakes last September, having taken out the G2 Tea Rose Stakes at her previous run.

She then finished third in the G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. As well as being a superior racehorse, Alizee is a member of one of the finest families in the Australian studbook.

Her half-brother Astern (Medaglia D’Oro), was a G1 winner and is now a Darley stallion, her dam Essaouira and grandam Alizes were both outstanding racehorses and third dam, the G1 winner La Baraka is a daughter of the champion race mare and producer, Triscay a winner of 15 races, five of them at G1.

Her sire Sepoy was the champion Australian sprinter of his era and has produced seven Stakes winners, the best of them after Alizee being the British-bred German G2 winner Unforgetable Filly.

Cummings will now consider a range of options for Alizee whose will be entered for all the major fillies’ races of the autumn as well as Australia’s premier mile race, the G1 Doncaster Mile.
