Ancient Wisdom rallied to take second behind impressive winner Economics in the G2 Dante Stakes at York, UK, on Thursday, 16 May.

Making his three-year-old return, last year’s G1 Futurity Trophy winner raced freely in a close fifth between Al Mumsak and Cambridge as God’s Window and Caviar Heights led the seven runners.

Cambridge looked to force the pace passing the three-furlong pole, with William Buick briefly forced to delay his challenge soon after by a strong-travelling Economics, shuffling the Godolphin runner back to sixth.

Barely two lengths covered the whole field entering the final quarter-mile before Night Of Thunder colt Economics stormed clear of his rivals a furlong and a half out.

Ancient Wisdom showed his battling qualities and the son of Dubawi picked off rivals to get up for second in the final strides, six lengths behind the winner.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said: “We were pleased with Ancient Wisdom, who coped with the good ground today and saw out the extended 10 furlongs well. We will let the dust settle before deciding where to go next, but he is entitled to come on for his first run of the season and it looks like he will get a mile and a half without a problem.”
