Shadow Of Light produced an excellent performance on his first Pattern-race appearance as he went down by three-quarters of a length to Cool Hoof Luke in the G2 Gimcrack Stakes at York, UK, on Friday, 23 August.
Stepping up in class following impressive wins at Yarmouth and Newmarket, Shadow Of Light followed The Strikin Viking leaving the stalls before the duo tacked across to the main field after the first furlong.
Settled in mid-field, Shadow Of Light was held together by William Buick as the race developed towards the far rail passing the two-furlong pole and quickened smartly to press for fourth approaching the final furlong.
The Charlie Appleby-trained juvenile, a three-parts brother to Earthlight, continued to make inroads on the leaders, passing Big Mojo and Symbol Of Strength in the closing strides as he hit the line strongly.
Charlie Appleby said: “It was a pleasing performance from Shadow Of Light, who put up a solid effort on his first try in Group company. He will have certainly gained some valuable experience and William couldn’t fault him – we just met a better horse on the day. There’s no reason why we can’t look towards the G1 Middle Park Stakes.”
