A brave and honest effort carried Astern into second place in the G1 Coolmore Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, October 29.
In a race that bought together Australia’s best three-year-old sprinters, Astern (John O’Shea/James McDonald) produced a typically brilliant performance, only to be overpowered in the final drive to the line by Flying Artie.
“He’s run well, he’s just found one better,” said his trainer John O’Shea.
“We know he’s one of the best of his age and he’s lost nothing.”
Having his first run for a month, Astern settled down on the grandstand side of the straight course, tracking Russian Revolution.
At the halfway point of the 1200m event, McDonald eased into the clear and Astern looked the winner when given full rein.
But Flying Artie had the better turn of foot, going to the line a length-and-a-quarter clear.
Astern held off Star Turn to retain second place.
The son of Medaglia D’Oro will now be spelled and return to racing next autumn.
