Basem acquitted himself well on his Pattern debut with a good third in the Group Three Betfred Mobile Strensall Stakes over nine furlongs at York, UK, on Saturday, August 22.
The Saeed bin Suroor-trained four-year-old, stepping up in class and trip following three excellent handicap runs over a mile, tacked across from his wide draw and soon settled in fourth of the nine runners for James Doyle.
He stayed on strongly to go third a furlong and a half from home and battled all the way to the line to finish a length and a half behind Mondialiste, who won in 1m 50.33s on good ground.
Saeed bin Suroor said: "Basem ran a good race. We might take him to Ayr for the Listed Doonside Cup on September 19, but the ground is important because he prefers a softer surface."
