Promising two-year-old Birchwood steps up to Group Two level for the Bet365 Superlative Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket, UK, on Saturday, July 11.

The Dark Angel colt, trained by Richard Fahey, came home third on good to yielding ground in a six-furlong Listed contest at Naas in Ireland on June 1.

He quickened strongly for a comfortable success in a Newbury conditions race over the same distance on May 16, when he beat subsequent Group Two Coventry Stakes third and fourth Eltezam and Beaverbrook.

Birchwood made a winning debut with a three quarters of a length verdict in a Doncaster maiden over five furlongs on May 2.

Richard Fahey commented: "Birchwood disappointed in Ireland, when the ground was quite soft and he got a bit upset before the race.

"He didn't run his race but it was one of those days and some of the results have proven to be a bit strange.

"On his run at Newbury, he has a chance and we feel that seven furlongs will suit him well.

"This is the race we have had in mind for him for some time and we will see what happens."

James Doyle has a second ride on Birchwood, who takes on eight others including impressive maiden winners Air Vice Marshal and War Department plus Beaverbrook and is drawn six.

Dubawi won the Superlative Stakes for Godolphin in 2004.
