Broadsiding secured a fourth top-level success, and first over a mile and a quarter, with a valiant nose verdict in the Rosehill Guineas on Saturday.
Australia’s reigning Champion Two-Year-Old had already displayed his brilliance over shorter distances, winning the Champagne Stakes, J J Aktins Stakes and Golden Rose, with his only previous 10-furlong outing coming when third in October’s Cox Plate.
Sent to the front approaching the final furlong, the Too Darn Hot colt responded bravely for James McDonald to see off Swiftfalcon and the late lunge of Aeliana.
Anamoe won the 2022 Rosehill Guineas before going on to add the following season’s Might And Power and Cox Plate over the same mile-and-a-quarter trip. Broadsiding looks set to drop back in distance for the rest of his campaign, with a journey to Royal Ascot for the Queen Anne Stakes one of his more fanciful options.
Future broodmare prospect Austmarr posted a first Group-race win in the G3 Birthday Card Stakes on the same card, while Tempted finished an unlucky third in the G1 Golden Slipper as she flashed home after meeting trouble in running.
In the United States, Good Cheer stretched her perfect record to six wins as she comfortably took the Fair Grounds Oaks.
The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro was scoring at G2 level for a third consecutive start, following impressive displays in the Golden Rod Stakes and Rachel Alexandra Stakes, and she looks the leading candidate for the Kentucky Oaks.
Sovereignty will be hoping to join Good Cheer at Churchill Downs, with the G2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes victor aiming to punch his Kentucky Derby ticket in this Saturday’s G1 Florida Derby.
VRC Oaks winner and Melbourne Cup fourth Zardozi will return to her favourite course Flemington for the G1 Australian Cup on the same day.
