Cummings says we haven’t seen the best of Broadsiding

Broadsiding produced a memorable performance to win the G1 Rosehill Guineas last month, but James Cummings believes the colt is ready to run the best race of his campaign in Saturday’s G1 All Aged Stakes at Royal Randwick.
Despite dropping back from 2,000m to 1,400m, Broadsiding has “freshened up beautifully” over the past month and his Godolphin Australia trainer couldn’t be happier leading into the weight-for-age feature on the final day of The Championships.
“I’ve loved the look of the horse this week,” Cummings said of his four-time G1 winner.
“It’s no mean feat, this All Aged Stakes, it’s quite an assembly of very good horses.
“But he produced a knockout gallop during the week and he seems to us to be perfectly ready for this assignment at the weekend.
“I do suspect he’s ready to run the best race of his campaign.”
Back and wide early, Broadsiding had to make two runs at Rosehill before bravely holding off subsequent ATC Derby winner Aeliana and the talented Swiftfalcon.
From a much kinder barrier on Saturday, Cummings can see champion jockey James Cummings saving ground and presenting Broadsiding at the right time as he tries to emulate Giga Kick (’23), Trapeze Artist (’18) and English (’16) as three-year-old All Aged Stakes winners over the past decade.
“I can see the horse enjoying a good run in the race and he’s got an enviable record at 1,400m,” Cummings said.
“I think the horse will be right in his comfort zone and it would be good to see him draw from the experience he had last preparation in those weight-for-age contests.
“It doesn’t get any harder than the Cox Plate, the cauldron of the Cox Plate that he encountered last year.
“There’s no doubt it’s a lot to ask a young horse, but we’ve asked him before and he was there to run a race in the Cox Plate.
“He’s bringing some of the best of the three-year-old form; we just keep seeing the form franked from behind Broadsiding, which is no less encouraging.”
Unlucky filly Zeitung should get conditions to her liking when she lines up in the G3 James H.B. Carr Stakes with Mark Zahra in the saddle.
Unable to find clear running in the straight during the G3 P.J. Bell Stakes 1,200m at Randwick two weeks ago, Zeitung rises to 1,400m and has drawn a better gate.
“I think the preparation for this race has been quite nice,” Cummings said.
“She was cut out at a vital stage in the P.J. Bell and she’s not big enough to carry them.
“We won’t look back and just be grateful if she can get a nice clean run through them this time.
“Third-up here, the fresh horse on the scene, she’s quite bright and ready to run a race.
“I think back to the way we had her in the lead-up to her win in the Vanity during Cup week, and we’ve got her in quite similar condition.
“She was very good over seven furlongs at Flemington that day.”
Cummings has sent Spacewalk (Ryan Maloney) and Pisces (Angela Jones) north to race at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Spacewalk is second-up in the Listed Ascot Stakes over 1,000m, but he’s drawn the outside barrier.
“He certainly can (win) and we are going to rely on good pace from that draw (12),” Cummings said.
“He can rely on good pace there and he’s a little bit fitter for having had the trip to Melbourne and back.
“I can see him running a race, but he really needs strong pace in a race like that.”
The trainer said a fitter Pisces was well placed despite also drawing wide in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes over 1,400m.
“This is a pretty nice race for Pisces, given his present rating and the set weights nature of the race,” he said.
“I’d love to see the horse kick off what might be a bit of Brisbane campaign.
“The horse is going to need a couple things to go his way from the draw (11).
“He had a good lung-burner behind Autumn Glow at Rosehill and he should be better for that.”
“We just like the weight scale here at set weights, he’s going to run well and we’ll see what he’s got to offer.”
