Chetwood continues return to racing at Gosford

The classy sprinter Chetwood (James Cummings/Tim Clark) has his second run after a long break in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford, Australia, on January 11.

Already a winner at G3 and Listed level, Chetwood comes into the race off a good trial at Rosehill late last month which followed his first-up run when he showed speed before dropping out at Randwick.

Trainer James Cummings describes Chetwood as “an interesting horse”.

“His trials are very encouraging and he’s a horse with his share of ability,” Cummings said.

Prior to his comeback run in Listed company at Randwick, Chetwood had won three trials, one of them by 12-1/2 lengths.

Following that run he has trialled again at Rosehill, finishing second.

“He looks a picture and we’re looking forward to seeing him back at the races,” Cummings said.

In a career-best performance, Chetwood won the G3 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle, beating the subsequent G1 winner Le Roman, before going to score a Listed win at Caulfield.

His latest assignment at Gosford doesn’t appear to have any obvious stand-out runner with Kuro, the joint topweight on 59kg with Chetwood, one of the strongest contenders.
