Haafaguinea ran well to finish third in the G2 Dubai City Of Gold Sponsored By SkyCargo over a mile and a half on turf at Meydan, UAE on Super Saturday, March 5.
The six-year-old son of Haafhd, trained by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by James Doyle, raced in second on the inside as Captain Morley took the field along.
He was asked to maintain his effort on the final bend and, though passed in the straight by the winner Postponed and the second Dariyan, both established Group One performers, Haafaguinea kept on well.
The Godolphin horse was beaten three lengths and a length respectively, with another five and a quarter lengths back to the fourth Balios. The winning time was a fast 2m 27.90s.
Haafaguinea has progressed through handicaps, running in his first Group race the previous time when second to another Godolphin horse, Tryster, in the G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes Sponsored By Al Tayer Motors at Meydan on February 18.
Saeed bin Suroor said: "Haafaguinea ran well to finish third behind two very good horses.
"We will see how he comes out of this race but we may step him up to two miles for the Dubai Gold Cup (G2, turf, Meydan, March 26) on World Cup night."
