Frosted and First Down commence their three-year-old campaigns in the Grade Two Holy Bull Stakes over an extended mile at Gulfsteam Park on Saturday, January 24.
They raced against each other in an extended six-furlong maiden at Belmont Park on September 20, when First Down stayed on well to beat Frosted by three quarters of a length.
Frosted (Kiaran McLaughlin/Irad Ortiz Jr) gained a decisive victory in an Aqueduct maiden over a mile on October 30 and went down by half a length to Leave The Light On at the same course in the nine-furlong Grade Two Remsen Stakes on November 29, when the third in a field of 13 was eight lengths further back.
First Down (Tom Albertrani/Rajiv Maragh) also ended his juvenile year at Aqueduct, finishing fourth of six to Blofeld in the Grade Two Nashua Stakes over a mile on November 2.
Kiaran McLaughlin said: "Frosted has done very well since the Remsen.
"We drew stall one here, which should be an advantage if he breaks well. He was drawn 13 in the Remsen, which cost us ground, but he shouldn't be far off the lead this time.
"He has been improving in his training - he looks focused and is doing everything well. We feel that he is the real deal and an exciting horse."
Tom Albertrani commented: "First Down has been training really well leading up to the Holy Bull.
"He was very impressive on his first start and I was hoping to see another step forward in the Nashua Stakes. He got caught out on a muddy track and met a little bit of traffic, which meant that he probably got more of an education that day.
"I am hoping that he can take another step forward. We beat Frosted first time out and hopefully First Down is a horse with some potential this year."
Frosted and First Down, drawn six, oppose eight other three-year-olds including Grade One Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile third Upstart, Remsen Stakes third Keen Ice and recent Gulfstream Park scorer Bluegrass Singer.
