The two-year-old Exceed And Excel colt, trained by Mark Johnston and ridden by William Buick, was slightly slow into stride and raced in fourth of the seven runners.
He moved up to challenge with two furlongs remaining and disputed the lead briefly before being headed.
Burantino tried to rally in the final furlong but went down by two lengths and half a length to the winner Air Force Blue, whose time was 1m 11.88s, and the second Washington DC.
Mark Johnston commented: "I thought that Buratino was in the right place at the right time but then did not pick up as well as the first and second.
"The ground is a bit dead, certainly on the soft side of good, and William says Buratino needs fast ground."
