Toscanini kept on to finish third in the Group Three Racing Post Lacken Stakes over six furlongs at Naas, Ireland, on Monday, June 1.
The three-year-old colt, representing Michael Halford, was slightly impeded leaving the stalls but soon recovered to race in third of the five-strong field under James Doyle.
He progressed to go second at the half-way stage but could not lay down a challenge to The Happy Prince and was passed by Anthem Alexander approaching the final furlong.
Toscanini rallied in the closing stages to go down by two and three-quarter lengths in total, with Anthem Alexander scoring in 1m 15.51s on good to yielding ground.
Michael Halford said: "James Doyle was happy with Toscanini but said that he was never comfortable on the ground - he just rolled around on it - and there was a very strong headwind.
"He finished his race well but the ground went against us and I am sure that there is better to come from the horse.
"We were keen to get a run into him before Royal Ascot and the plan is still to head there for either the Commonwealth Cup or the Jersey Stakes."
