With The Moonlight narrowly eclipsed in G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes

With The Moonlight continued an excellent start to her season as she chased home crack Dubawi mare In Italian in the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland, USA, on Saturday, 15 April.

The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old, who completed a G2 double in the Cape Verdi and Balanchine at Meydan in February, raced in third initially behind In Italian and Queen Goddess before White Frost slipped up her inside entering the first turn.

With The Moonlight continued to race in fourth as In Italian dictated, with William Buick making his move around the field on last year’s G1 Belmont Oaks runner-up turning in.

The Godolphin filly pressed Queen Goddess and White Frost at the top of the straight, staying on strongly to take second inside the final furlong. She saw out the extended mile well to finish three lengths behind In Italian, who made all to post a third G1 victory.

Charlie Appleby said: “With The Moonlight ran a good, solid race. She is slightly more vulnerable over this distance but will be bang there when we step her back up to a mile and a quarter. The likelihood is that we will head to Belmont in June for her next start in the G1 New York Stakes.”
