Born in Norway, William grew up in an equestrian family as his father was a trainer.

William’s first professional race was in August 2006 and he celebrated his first victory the following month at Salisbury.

In 2008, he was crowned joint Champion Apprentice in Great Britain with 50 winners. He has ridden all over the world, from Dubai to Japan and America. He enjoyed his first G1 success for Godolphin on Sajjhaa, who took the Jebel Hatta at Meydan in 2013.

The following year, William partnered Charming Thought to a thrilling victory in the G1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket in 2014, providing Charlie Appleby with a first G1 victory in the UK in the process.

He landed his first Dubai World Cup in March 2015, steering the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Prince Bishop to victory at Meydan.

G1 success continued over the years that followed and in 2018, his lifelong dream of winning the G1 Derby at Epsom was realised in emphatic style aboard the Charlie Appleby-trained Masar when he recorded a dominant victory in the highly coveted British Classic.

In 2020, William rode the Charlie Appleby trained Ghaiyyath to three straight G1 victories in the Coronation Cup, Eclipse, and the Juddmonte International during a season that would see the horse crowned World Champion.

William has continued to excel at the highest level, with top-level victories around the world in the royal blue. He rode Modern Games to all five of his G1 victories across four different countries, including the French 2,000 Guineas, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile.
