Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby reached a notable milestone when sending out his 100th winner of the season, the smart filly Wordcraft, in Saturday's Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket.

To have achieved the century before June 1 is proof that Team Godolphin have set a cracking pace in the first half of the season.

Appleby currently leads the British Flat Trainers' Championship, with 100 winners and £1.269m in prizemoney, comfortably ahead of nearest rival Richard Hannon, on 66 winners and £1.153m.

The championship, covering the period 9 November 2014 to 7 November 2015, is decided on prizemoney.

Appleby said he was delighted and proud that the milestone had been reached. "We had set ourselves a target of June 1, so it was nice to do it with a couple of days to spare. It represents a great achievement by the team here at Moulton Paddocks.

"There was a change of policy with our horses during the winter. We left many of the unexposed and lower rated types here in the UK rather than sending them to Dubai.

"They have developed nicely here, and many of them have improved significantly. The wins on the board are evidence of that.

"In the second half of the season, our aim is to find a St Leger horse, Classic types for next year, and also to try to uncover two-year-olds capable of winning Group Ones. We also have several good contenders for Royal Ascot," he added.
