Crittenden was only a neck away at the line from winning the Grade Three American Derby over nine furlongs on turf at Arlington Park, USA, on Saturday, July 11.
The Eoin Harty-trained three-year-old finished strongly in the straight to nearly beat World Approval after racing in fourth on the inside for most of the race under Flavien Prat.
It was a steady pace set in front by Nun The Less, with the first quarter in 25.46s and the initial half-mile in 52.46s.
Crittenden moved up turning in to take third, was switched out, came with a big challenge and gained second inside the final furlong.
He closed the gap inexorably on the winner but the post came too soon for the son of Distorted Humor. World Approval crossed the line a neck ahead in 1m 52.92s on good turf, with Nun The Less two lengths behind Crittenden in third.
The first three finished clear, with four and a half lengths back to the fourth in the seven-runner race.
Eoin Harty commented: "Crittenden has run a smashing race.
"It was a paceless race and subsequently favoured those up front but Crittenden put in a valiant effort and is progressing all the time.
"There will be discussions about where to go next but one option would be to remain at Arlington Park and go for the Group One Secretariat Stakes over the same trip on Arlington Million day (August 15)."
