Freddy Head: what makes Deauville great

People always ask me what makes Deauville such an attractive racing location, and the answer is very simple: the ambience.

Everybody's here - the owners, trainers, jockeys, from many different countries. And then there are the horses and the sales. The stud farms are also not far away.

To top it off, it's a great place to be because there is a wonderful beach, beautiful, stylish hotels, and it is a true water sports resort. Everybody likes to be here - I've never come across anybody who didn't feel that way.

Racing at Deauville is traditionally for the entire month of August, though this year because of the temporary closure of Longchamp, extra meetings have been programmed here.

Luckily, we have not had bad weather this year. It's been pretty dry. If it had been very wet, we would have been in trouble.

As a jockey, I won every major race run at Deauville. But, for me, one win that really sticks out is Lyphard in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1972).

Lyphard, trained by my Dad (Alec Head), was a very good horse. He was outstanding, actually, and that win at Deauville was very special.

I think the Prix Jacques le Marois (run over the straight mile) is one of the most important races in the calendar, and fortunately, some of my winners in the race, both as jockey and trainer, have been champions.

Miesque, who I rode to victory in 1987-88, was a true champion, as was Goldikova, who I trained to win the race in record time in 2009 - and she went on to win 3 G1 Breeders' Cup Miles.

And, of course, I am not forgetting Moonlight Cloud, who won the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and the Prix Jacques le Marois in the space of eight days, both in record time. I trained her for George Strawbridge. She was fantastic.

As a trainer, I love bringing my two-year-olds to Deauville. Naturally, Chantilly is the best place for training racehorses, but they never see anything. They are constantly in the woods.

So, here in Deauville, I take them to the racecourse. They see the stands, and other different things, and I believe it makes them grow up.

Take the filly Invincible Queen, who I ran here for the first time this week. (This juvenile filly won Tuesday's Prix de la Reboursiere, over 1,600m, by 3 lengths). She's been here in Deauville almost three weeks. At the start, she was nothing special, but with each day she has been coming on, coming on. I like it when they do that.
I would like to bring more two-year-olds here, but I can't get enough boxes. I have 15 boxes at present, and horses are coming and going all the time. They work on the track at Deauville in the mornings and they seem to like it.

Freddy Head, 69, is a legendary racing figure in France. A six-time champion jockey, he won 4 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphes, 6 runnings of the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, and every other race of note domestically. He began training in 1998 and is fast becoming almost as successful as he was in the saddle, already winning 3 G1 Breeders' Cups with champion Goldikova. Freddy has been coming to Deauville all his life.
