The Charlie Appleby-trained three-year-old was slightly short of room leaving the stalls and raced at the rear of the four runners under William Buick for much of the six-furlong contest.
He stayed on to go second with half a furlong left but could not challenge Strath Burn, who prevailed by a length in 1m 12.21s on good to firm ground, with a neck back to Divine in third and Watchable a further head back in fourth.
Charlie Appleby said: "I was pleased with Portamento. He has travelled well and probably not let himself down on the ground, although the connections of Strath Burn had similar concerns, so take nothing away from the winner.
"We will wait for conditions that suit Portamento before making any plans. We might contemplate stepping him up to seven furlongs before the season finishes but softer ground will be the key."
