International Trainer of the Year Award for Charlie Appleby

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby was crowned International Trainer of the Year at the 50th annual Horserace Writers & Photographers Association (HWPA) Derby Awards, held in London, UK, on Monday, December 5.

During 2016, Charlie Appleby enjoyed Pattern race success across the globe with G1 victories in Dubai (Tryster, Jebel Hatta), Great Britain (Hawkbill, Coral-Eclipse) and France (Wuheida, Prix Marcel Boussac). He also gained four G3 successes in Australia, courtesy of Qewy, Oceanographer and Francis Of Assisi (twice).

Charlie Appleby said: “I am very honoured. I must thank His Highness Sheikh Mohammed for giving me this opportunity and Team Godolphin for all their support and commitment over the last 12 months.

“The highlight was Hawkbill winning Eclipse and finishing off the season with an incredible time in Australia.”

The other nominees in the International Trainer of the Year category were David O'Meara, Sir Michael Stoute and Roger Varian. The award is decided by the International Racing Bureau.
